Ichiro is a Member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2025
The Baseball Writers’ Association of America made public the members of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2025. The list of inductees are:
- Ichiro Suzuki
- Billy Wagner
- CC Sabathia
- Dick Allen
- Dave Parker

On his first ballot with the BBWAA, Ichiro became the first baseball player of Asian descent to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, giving this ballot worldwide importance. His historic achievement came within a hair’s breadth of being chosen unanimously, precisely like his former colleague Derek Jeter in 2020. The only player elected unanimously in the long history of the BBWAA process is Mariano Rivera, a 2019 inductee and closer.
On his third attempt, power-speed dynamo Carlos Beltrán received 70.3% of the ballots marked as his name, just missing the 75% threshold. Andruw Jones, a legendary defensive center fielder, had 66.2% of the vote counted against him on his ninth ballot. After second baseman Chase Utley’s total of 39.8%, no player on the 24-man ballot reached a more significant percentage.

In a game where starting pitchers no longer play a pivotal role, Sabathia’s 2019 Hall of Fame induction—the first for a pitcher since Roy Halladay and Mariano Rivera—is all the more remarkable for the legacy he has left behind.
Sabathia, a 6-foot-6 left-handed pitcher, was a real workhorse of his day, even though his numbers don’t compare to many Hall of Fame starters (251 wins and 3,577 1/3 innings). He threw more innings than any pitcher since 1989 in his first season (2001 with Cleveland through 2019 with the Yankees).
Among his many accomplishments, he ranks tenth all-time among left-handed starting pitchers with a 61.8 bWAR and an ERA+ of 116, 16% above the league average. Sabathia has 25,050 victories and 3,093 strikeouts, making him one of only 15 pitchers in MLB history to do it. He is also one of just three southpaws who accomplished this feat.
